Another decreasing stitch that could be used in crochet projects is the Single Crochet 3 Together or abbreviated as sc3tog in written patterns. This stitch will have you decreasing your project in no time!

Single Crochet 3 Together

This stitch will combine three stitches into one using the single crochet stitch.

The Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog) is crocheted in the same way as the Single Crochet 2 Together but with the addition of adding an additional single crochet.

When to use the Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog) stitch?

The Single Crochet 3 Together will also have a left leaning slant. If you want to decrease on one side of the project, this stitch will definitely enhance the look to your project. Such as, a triangle shawl where you started from one point and increased to go outward and will need to decrease once you reached its maximum width.

You can use this stitch in any other type where decreasing your stitches will be needed. If you are crocheting a winter hat and started at the bottom, decreasing stitches will be needed when you reach the top/crown of the hat. It would be the same if you crocheted socked from the top (cuff) to the bottom (toes).

To crochet through the Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog),

  1. Make a [slip knot] and chain a certain number of chains to create your foundation chain. To practice the sc3tog stitch, make 10-20 chains in your [foundation chain].
  2. For Row 1, crochet the [single crochet] in each chain of the foundation chain.
  3. Turn your work and chain 1.
  4. Skip the first stitch and do a single crochet in each of the stitches from row 1 including the top of the turning chain. The top of the turning chain was the one stitch that was skipped in the foundation chain.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 more times.
  6. Turn your work and chain 1.
  7. Skip the first stitch and do a single crochet in the next stitch just to move in a bit so that you can notice the decrease more clearly.
  8. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
  9. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have two loops on your hook.

10. Insert the hook into the next stitch.

11. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have three loops on your hook.

12. Insert the hook into the next stitch.

13. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have four loops on your hook.

14. Yarn over and pull through all four loops that are on your hook.

15. For practice, repeat steps 8 through 14 until you only have one stitch left.

Check out the video tutorial that I posted on my YouTube channel.

What types of projects will you (or have you) use the Single Crochet 3 Together? Are there any projects that you would like for me to design using decreasing stitches.

Wherever you are in the world, happy crocheting!
