Sometimes you are going to need to make a decrease in your crochet project, and Single Crochet 2 Together is one of those stitches. If you are starting out, you might gravitate towards projects that are only squares or rectangles. Anything outside of these types of projects would seem like a crazy thought.

When I first started crocheting, squares and rectangles were all I did. And I really did think that anything else would be a crazy idea for me to even think about creating. I think it stemmed from not having enough faith in my skills and not really understanding how it is done.

Single Crochet 2 Together

This stitch will combine two stitches into one using the single crochet stitch.

The Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) is one of these stitches that will help you decrease your stitches by one every time you make it.  This type of decreasing stitch can be used in other types of crochet stitches. Such as the half double crochet and double crochet stitches.

When can it be used?

The Single Crochet 2 Together is great if you want to make a winter hat from the bottom to the top.

Or if you want to make a triangle shawl from one end, work your way outward, and then start decreasing to get to the opposite end.

Or if you are crocheting socks from the top to the toes.

To crochet through the Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog),

  1. Make a slip knot and chain a certain number of chains to create your foundation chain. To practice make 10-20 chains in your foundation chain.
  2. For Row 1, crochet the single crochet in each chain of the foundation chain.
  3. Turn your work and chain 1.
  4. Skip the first stitch and do a single crochet in each of the stitches from row 1 including the top of the turning chain. The top of the turning chain was the one stitch that was skipped in the foundation chain.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 one more time.
  6. Turn your work and chain 1.
  7. Skip the first stitch and do a single crochet in the next stitch just to move in a bit.
  8. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
  9. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have two loops on your hook.
  10. 10.Insert the hook into the next stitch.
  11. 11.Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have three loops on your hook.
  12. 12.Yarn over and pull through all three loops that are on your hook
  13. 13.For practice, repeat steps 8 through 12 until you only have one stitch left.
