Last week, I posted a tutorial on how to do a decrease in crochet using the Single Crochet 2 Together technique. But, there are other decreasing techniques that you could use in your projects like the Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog).

Double Crochet 2 Together

Let’s say you were working with other types of stitches besides the single crochet in your crochet project and you want to start decreasing. So, do you have to do a Single Crochet 2 Together? Nah… you could use the same method of decreasing your stitch count with any of the basic stitches. Such as, the double crochet.

Double Crochet 2 Together works in the same way as the Single Crochet 2 Together. Once you know one, then you know the others when combining two stitches. That’s how I kept it all straight in my head. It can seem daunting to learn the different stitches and then crochet techniques on top of that. But, they tend to work hand-in-hand so you can make it easier to remember it all.

When can it be used?

The Double Crochet 2 Together comes in handy in any type of crochet project where you were already working with double crochets and you would like to decrease your stitch count by one in a row.

If you weren’t already working with double crochets, then it could still be used to add more personality to your project and create a different effect.

To crochet through the Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog),

  1. Make a slip knot and chain a certain number of chains to create your foundation chain. To practice make 10-20 chains in your foundation chain.
  2. For Row 1, skip two stitches and crochet the double crochet in each chain of the foundation chain.
  3. Turn your work and chain 3.
  4. Skip the first stitch and do a double crochet in each of the stitches from row 1 including the top of the turning chain. The top of the turning chain was the one stitch that was skipped in the foundation chain.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 one more time.
  6. Turn your work and chain 3.
  7. Skip the first stitch and do a double crochet in the next stitch just to move in a bit.
  8. Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch.
  9. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have three loops on your hook.
  10. 10.Yarn over and pull through the first two loops.
  11. 11.Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch.
  12. 12.Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have four loops on your hook.
  13. 13.Yarn over and pull through the first two loops. You should have three loops on your hook.
  14. 14.Yarn over and pull through all three loops that are on your hook
  15. 15.For practice, repeat steps 8 through 14 until you only have one stitch left.
